Arizona is hard on pool water. An Arizona pool loses roughly four to six feet of water a year to evaporation, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and the water that evaporates leaves its minerals behind. Valley tap water is already hard — the City of Phoenix reports 10.1 to 16.2 grains per gallon — so those minerals concentrate at the waterline as scale.
The sun works on the chemistry too. The CDC lists sunlight among the things that use up chlorine, and recommends keeping a home pool at a pH of 7.0 to 7.8 with at least 1 ppm of chlorine. Holding those numbers steady through a Phoenix summer — and clearing out what a monsoon storm blows into the water — is what weekly service is for.
